Visit to Middelgrunden Offshore Wind Energy Farm (Copenhagen, Denmark)
We organize regular visits to Middelgrunden offshore Wind Energy farm in collaboration with Middelgrunden Wind Turbine Cooperative. The activity attracts every year visitors from all over the world and it has proved a success for complementary training as well as for networking, side event or outdoor activity.
The tour is highly recommended for industry groups as well as for students at different ages. The presentation is tailor-made to the demands of the audience, with time for questions and open-discussion about wind turbines, the Danish Cooperative Model, Middelgrunden planning, ocean energies, renewable energy history and targets in Denmark, electricity markets or energy systems.
There are three different ways of visiting the farm:
A) Simple boat trip
The site visit includes a 1.5 to 2-hour guided tour where we sail to the 40 MW farm and, if the weather allows, we go up the foundation and inside one of twenty 2 MW turbines. Explanation on the boat about the main milestones and challenges of Middelgrunden Wind Farm, its construction, operation and maintenance, ownership structure, as well as Q&A session about wind and energy policy in Denmark, etc.
Through the boat tour and the turbine, and if the weather allows, we will get unique views of Middelgrunden Wind Farm, Øresunds Bridge, Lillegrunden Wind Farm, Lynetten, and Copenhagen and Malmø waterfront.
B) Boat trip and lecture
Depending on the number of people and generally for large groups, it is recommended to have a presentation before getting on-board – we can usually organize that close to the harbour, at the hotel where the visitors are staying, or at an office in central Copenhagen. The presentation takes about 1.5-hour and will provide information about the Middelgrunden project, the Cooperative, the layout of the farm, the planning phase, construction, operation and maintenance of the wind farm, experiences gained in offshore wind, Danish energy policy, etc.
C) Family Guests and small groups
We now have the possibility to offer a special tour thought for small groups or families who wish to visit Middelgrunden Wind farm. We will board a boat that goes to the closest islands to Middelgrunden Wind Farm, which will provide as good views of the wind farm as the ones we can get from our boat. Explanations about the wind farm, its construction and operation, and all history behind it will be shared with our guests.

About Middelgrunden Middelgrunden was the world’s largest offshore wind farm at its construction time, with turbines in the Megawatt (MW) scale. Today the turbines and the Cooperative remain world famous. Most likely, Middelgrunden is still the offshore wind farm closest to recreational and densely populated areas – its smart layout and wind turbines have been photographed and visited in all weathers by worldwide visitors.
The story of Middelgrunden goes back to 1996 when a group of wind energy enthusiasts got together to create a new wind turbine cooperative. This way, an offshore wind farm with 20 turbines was established, where 10 of the turbines belong to HOFOR and the other 10 to the Cooperative. |
